Hahndorf Hill Winery

A Germanic influence reigns at Hahndorf Hill Winery, which is not surprising given that this beautiful vineyard is located adjacent to historic Hahndorf village – the oldest surviving German settlement in Australia.

This boutique producer is pioneering and producing excellent Austrian varietal wines within Australia, for which it has won acclaim both nationally and abroad. However, it also produces the classic varieties that the Adelaide Hills wine region is renowned for – sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio, cool-climate shiraz and fresh rosé.

Hahndorf Hill Winery is presently owned by Larry Jacobs and Marc Dobson, who both VISITOR’S GUIDE    immigrated to Australia from South Africa in 1997 and purchased the property in 2002 from the original owner, who had emigrated from Germany.

Larry and Marc’s familiarity with the red grape blaufränkisch, which had thrived at Hahndorf Hill Winery for 20 years, led them to its exciting white counterpart – grüner veltliner. After importing six different clones of grüner veltliner from Austria, they produced South Australia’s first grüner veltliner wine in 2010.

Hahndorf Hill Winery’s faith that this grape would excel in the Adelaide Hills was affirmed when the 2012 Hahndorf Hill Winery Grüner Veltliner was rated as the best in the world outside of Austria at the 2013 Falstaff International Gruner Veltliner Tasting held in Vienna.

Grüner veltliner may be new to Australia, yet Larry and Marc believe the Adelaide Hills offers the perfect terroir for this grape. The Adelaide Hills is unique among the wine-growing regions of Australia in that it offers the magical combination of one of the coolest mean January temperatures together with one of the biggest diurnal variations in temperature – factors similar to Austria’s grüner veltliner wine country.

Visitors to Hahndorf Hill Winery’s inviting cellar door can taste the vineyard’s unique wines matched to the world’s most acclaimed chocolate in the winery’s ChocoVino experience, which is based on the concept of terroir.
