Mitchell Wines

Mitchell Wines was established in 1975 by Andrew and Jane Mitchell. The winery’s entire range of wines receives multiple accolades every year, recognising the long-term commitment Mitchell Wines has to both its vineyard and the Clare Valley region.

Andrew has always sought to make elegant, balanced wines with intense varietal fruit flavours and definitive regional character. He has travelled extensively in order to develop his understanding of the great wines of the world. Together, Andrew and Jane continue to develop wine styles and marketing strategies. Jane focuses on the management of the business and has an active role in the Clare Valley Winemakers Association, working to promote the area and the wine industry.

The winery sources the grapes for its wines from its four local vineyards. The vineyards are located in and around the Watervale, Auburn and Sevenhill sub-regions and range in altitude from 300 to 450 metres. The varieties planted include riesling, semillon, shiraz, merlot, grenache and cabernet, with vines ranging in age from five years old to more than 55 years old.

Careful land and water management is an important aspect of Mitchell Wines. Andrew has long-considered dry-grown vines to have better developed characteristics in the final wine. In addition to being sustainable, the biodynamic practices in place at Mitchell Wines have proven to deliver consistently excellent fruit.

At Mitchell Wines’ cellar door, the welcome is genuine. The cellar door staff shares the Mitchell family’s passion for wine and the beautiful rural region of Sevenhill. Rich in history, Sevenhill offers many activities to create a memorable tourism experience.

NV Mitchell Watervale Riesling

Riesling offers intensity of flavour and tells the story of its origins without the need for intervention. This riesling displays classic, intense citrus aromas and dry, tangy flavours. A refreshing wine of poise and balance, this wine finds enough roundness in the mouth to balance a pleasing mineral and crisp, dry finish.

NV Mitchell Sevenhill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon

Blessed with a climate that allows for a long ripening period, this wine impresses with every new release. The initial burst of blackcurrant aromas is followed by hints of fresh mint and tarragon. Despite being bottle-aged, this wine has a youthful spring in its step, with the mouth-coating fruit supported by fine tannins. The result is a long, elegant and dry finish.

NV Mitchell Peppertree Vineyard Shiraz

Planted on a barren block of rock limestone, these shiraz vines are cultivated organically in the heart of Watervale. A strong scent of dark berry fruits is the initial welcome, while the palate displays mouth- coating blackberries and hints of black pepper. This has been considered a landmark Australian shiraz for decades.

NV Mitchell McNicol Shiraz

Sourced from mature, dry-grown vineyards, this wine spends two years in fine-grained French oak to optimise its ageing potential. This shiraz offers a surprisingly rich and intense fruit- driven palate, with cracked pepper and dark chocolate showing complexity. Mitchell Wines has cellared this wine for eight years after bottling, offering customers the finest red wine when it is ready to drink.
