Paulett Wines

Paulett Wines was established by Neil and Alison Paulett more than 30 years ago in the beautiful Polish Hill River sub-region of Clare Valley. In that time, the property has expanded from 47 hectares to 147 hectares and the ongoing vineyard development now sees 25 hectares under vine.

At the winery, there is a substantial portion of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon vines that are more than 70 years of age, and riesling that is more than 35 years of age. These treasured resources make up the backbone of Paulett Wines’ premium red and white varieties. Namely, the Andreas Shiraz and the Antonina Riesling, named after the original settlers of the property in the mid-1800s.
Neil and Alison understand and embrace the challenge of being custodians of the land for future generations. Their son, Matthew, is now the vineyard manager, and his ability to nurture both old and new vines is paying dividends.

Paulett Wines’ reputation for producing wines of finesse, elegance and intensity is justly-earned, and its skill and care can be seen consistently from vintage to vintage. Neil has a craftsman’s sensibility, coupled with more than 40 years of experience. Since its first vintage in 1983, Paulett Wines has received many Australian and international accolades. One of many highlights was being awarded the trophy for ‘Best Riesling in the World’ for its 2005 Aged Release Polish Hill River Riesling at the 2010 Canberra International Riesling Challenge.

In 2013, Paulett Wines’ cellar door celebrated its 30th anniversary. It has become one of the must-see places in Clare Valley, often described as having the most spectacular view of any cellar door in the country. A welcoming atmosphere, premium wines and spectacular views are all part of the package that wine lovers have come to expect from Paulett Wines.

Paulett Wines is evolving again with the addition of the new Bush Devine Garden and Café on the deck, opening in June 2015. The Bush Devine Garden and Café is an indigenous Australian bush food garden, designed as a sensory garden that invites visitors to explore through smell, taste and touch. Guests can stay and indulge in the delicious bush food produce and tasting platters fresh from the garden, while enjoying a bottle of wine from the cellar door and taking in the magnificent views over Polish Hill River.

2015 Pauletts Polish Hill River Riesling

This wine generally shows citrus and lime flavours with a wonderful spine of mineral-like acid adding great balance, length and finish. It has a wonderful potential to age, usually well over ten years. In doing so, the wine shows lovely secondary- aged characters of toast and honey.

2015 Pauletts Antonina Riesling

Fine and elegant with a wonderful backbone of mineral acid that shows the pure essence of riesling from Polish Hill River. As a young wine, a citrus and lime sorbet character is evident. This is a classic winemaker’s wine that has been made to age. It is named after the daughter of Andreas Weinman, who was the first Polish settler to own the Paulett Wines property.

2012 Pauletts Polish Hill River Shiraz

A great endorsement of the strength of the region, this shiraz has had a continuing style of elegance and flavour since 1984. The wine will typically show ripe fruit flavours and tannins with an even balance of subtle oak, grape acid and an elegant, long palate.

2009 Pauletts 47/74 Handcrafted Malbec Cabernet

This malbec cabernet was produced by Neil Paulett in close collaboration with his son, Matthew, making the most of the excellent malbec produced in 2008. The name 47/74 represents the mirror image of Neil and Matthew’s birth years and symbolises the transition of old to new. The wine is robust, firm, textured, velvety and generous to drink.
