Kilikanoon Wines

Since being founded by winemaker Kevin Mitchell in 1997, Kilikanoon Wines has built an enviable reputation for consistently crafting outstanding wines. This is demonstrated by the numerous awards and accolades Kilikanoon Wines has received, including recognition from James Halliday in the 2013 Australian Wine Companion as Winery of the Year.

Clare Valley wines are well regarded for elegance, powerful generosity, balance of length and fruitfulness, as well as attractive soft tannins. Kilikanoon Wines attributes much of this to the high diurnal temperature difference – warm, dry days and cool, crisp nights. During the growing season, the grapes ripen under the heat of the sun by day and are refreshed at night, allowing optimal fruit ripeness, tannin and flavour development before the fruit is sugar-ripe, which ensures that acid levels are retained. Kilikanoon Wines epitomises the structured acid backbone style that complements food so well.

With tremendous terroir diversity, various altitudes, four distinct soil structures and vast differences in sunshine and rain between vineyard sites, it is no wonder that Clare Valley can deliver outstanding examples of so many varieties. Riesling, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, grenache, mataro, pinot gris and semillon all excel in the region. Kilikanoon Wines has selected vineyards across Clare Valley to take maximum advantage of this diversity, with grape varieties planted to suit each distinctive terroir.

Kilikanoon Wines’ winemaking philosophy is aimed at style consistency and uncompromised quality. The winery’s vineyards, which date back as far as 1865, are managed for low-yield and maximum flavour intensity. Each parcel of grapes is processed in small batches and kept separate for individual management, right up until the time for final blending and bottling.
Kilikanoon Wines’ cosy cellar door is housed in the property’s original stone farmhouse, which was built in the 1860s. Nestled in the Skilly Valley and surrounded by pretty cottage gardens, a fruit orchard, vineyards and tall gums, it is an idyllic setting for tasting the range of award winning wines.

2013 Kilikanoon Killerman’s Run Cabernet Sauvignon

Old Mr Killerman lived alone in bushland behind Kilikanoon Wines’ cellar door, where he trapped rabbits, grew fruit and, legend has it, made his own wines in a galvanised iron lean-to. The Killerman’s Run Collection blends all of Clare Valley’s sub-regions to produce wines of outstanding quality and value, for both everyday drinking and medium-term cellaring.

2014 Kilikanoon Mort’s Block Riesling

The Mort’s Block Riesling is part of the Classic Clare Collection, which expresses the unique terrior of Clare Valley. The region is becoming famous for optimising nuances of its sub-regions to produce exceptional examples of riesling, shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and grenache. Further celebrating the region’s diversity, this collection includes pinot gris and semillon.

2010 Kilikanoon Oracle Shiraz

The Oracle Shiraz sits in the Asset Collection, which comprises a range of small production reserve wines that showcase regional and varietal diversity, encompassing Clare Valley, Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale. These wines exhibit the unique and unequivocal essence of Kilikanoon Wines and will reward long-term cellaring.

2010 Kilikanoon Revelation Shiraz

Icon Collection wines are the result of access to some of Australia’s most outstanding vineyards, combined with a fastidious approach to winemaking and uncompromising commitment to quality. Revelation sits atop the collection as a run of 1000 bottles of the best wine from exceptional vintages, crafted by blending the finest components from the vineyards that excel that year.
