Pikes Wines

The Pike family has a long history of winemaking and brewing that spans three centuries. In 1878, Henry Pike emigrated from England to South Australia. It was here that he established the family business, H. Pike & Co., producing quality beer, soft drinks, cordial and the famous tonic ale. Henry emblazoned his beers with a striking English pike fish label – a tradition that Pikes Wines has continued on all its current products.

Pikes Wines was established in 1984 by brothers Andrew and Neil Pike, with the assistance of their parents Edgar and Merle, at Polish Hill River Estate in the Polish Hill River sub-region of the beautiful Clare Valley.

The Pikes Wines cellar door is situated amongst the vineyards at the Polish Hill River Estate. The building is a restored 1860s shearing shed that was transformed into a cellar door in 1993. In 2010, the cellar door was given a makeover, with two new Enomatic machines installed, ensuring every tasting is fresh and at the perfect temperature with the touch of a button. The cellar door also offers gourmet grazing plates for purchase, ideal to enjoy with a glass of wine on the picturesque lawn area in front of the winery.

The winery aims to produce varieties that reflect the Clare Valley region and vintage conditions, watching over the vines during the formative stage and intervening only when necessary. Since 2001, Pikes Wines has collaborated with the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) on a complete winery wastewater recycling program for its vineyard.

In 1996, Pikes Wines reintroduced Pikes Beer, and in January 2015 opened a craft brewery and bottling line. Visitors can see a working brewery, meet the brewers, taste cold beer off the tap and take in the beautiful estate scenery.

TASTING NOTES

2014 Pikes The Merle Riesling

A brilliant pale-green colour, this wine exhibits pristine aromas of lime, lemon and stone fruit with slate mineral notes. Once the acid kicks in, the whole palate tightens up and the textural aspects shine through. Perfect for those who enjoy crisp, fresh rieslings, this wine can be cellared for ten to 15 years.

2013 Pikes Eastside Shiraz

Ripe plum and black cherry fruits with hints of mocha, graphite and some spicy notes, as well as a nice little touch of charry French oak in the background. This shiraz is medium-bodied with ripe, dark fruits at the fore, with balanced-acidity and savoury tannins providing length and structure.

2014 Pikes Traditionale Riesling

Typically fresh and bright, displaying layers of lemon-lime zest, tropical fruit and subtle nuances of mineral and wet slate. The palate is fresh, crisp and dry with the flavours woven tightly around a core of bright acidity that provides length and drive to the soft, dry finish.

Pikes Beer

The Pikes Beer range is available Australia-wide and includes Pilsener Lager, Sparkling Ale, Genuine Stout and interesting seasonal brews.
