Leconfield Coonawarra

Founded in 1974 by pioneering oenologist Sydney Hamilton, the award-winning Leconfield Coonawarra is situated in the heart of Australia’s famous Coonawarra region. With rich terra rossa soil over limestone, it’s the perfect environment to produce premium cabernet sauvignon.

With 47.7 hectares of vineyards, Leconfield Coonawarra produces grapes for the renowned Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, and also specialises in riesling and merlot, which have won multiple awards over their long history. Each year, the winery grows smaller parcels of cabernet franc, shiraz and petit verdot grapes, as well as white varieties including riesling and chardonnay.

Leconfield Coonawarra has had many great achievements, including the development of a temperature-controlled fermentation process for white wines, which preserves the grape’s delicate aromas and flavours.

This revolutionary technique set the benchmark for white wine production in Australia. After returning from retirement in his mid-70s, Hamilton had a dream to create a classic Australian red wine. He began growing grapes in South Australia, where his family has lived since 1837, and founded his own vineyard and winery, which is named after his ancestor Lord Leconfield.

In 1981, Leconfield Coonawarra was acquired by his nephew Dr Richard Hamilton. Retaining the original identity and character, the winery maintains the essence of the Coonawarra region. Its flagship wine – Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon – has been consistently awarded high ratings by James Halliday since its inception, including a score of 95 for the 2015 vintage.

Leconfield Coonawarra’s cellar door is a must-do experience when visiting the region. Winemakers are often on-hand to greet visitors, and their knowledge of the region and winemaking process is extremely informative.

Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon

The classic Leconfield Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon has been the flagship wine since its first release in 1977. The bouquet shows ripe cassis and blackberry fruits, with hints of red cedar, nutmeg and cinnamon through its maturation in French oak. The palate consists of long tannins that ensure the wine will age beautifully over the next decade.

Leconfield Coonawarra Merlot

This merlot is a beautiful deep-red colour with crimson highlights. Its inherent fruit sweetness and long, silky tannins fill out the palate. Developed from vines grown in clay-rich terra rossa soil since 1982, the merlot has a fragrant and rich fruit nose with hints of plum, mocha, allspice and vanilla.

Leconfield The Sydney Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

This elegant cabernet sauvignon pays homage to the winery’s founder, Sydney Hamilton. The key to this wine was the vineyard selection made at harvest with carefully selected grapes from Leconfield’s 30-year-old vines. With an attractive nose of black olive and cassis elements, and perfumed with fine-grained French oak with silky tannins that provide persistence and length.

Leconfield Coonawarra Old Vine Riesling

Sydney Hamilton planted the six acre riesling vineyard in 1974. Today, it remains dry-grown and produces excellent fruit every year. The philosophy for this wine is to have minimal handling. This is wine in its purest form, created from a single vineyard and fermenter. Dry in style, this flavoursome riesling features an aromatic lime- citrus fruit bouquet and beautiful floral characteristics.
