Penley Estate

Penley Estate was established by Kym Tolley in 1989, continuing the winemaking heritage of the Penfold and Tolley families. With more than 115 hectares of sprawling vineyards, Penley Estate produces wines under 15 different labels each year – including Chertsey, Phoenix and Hyland.

Traditional winemaking elements have been a driving force at Penley Estate since its initial creation, with an unbroken line of winemakers in both the Tolley and Penfold families. This family history highlights Penley Estate’s solid and sustainable commitment to the Australian wine industry.

When Kym Tolley first purchased the land, it was simply a green site that has now become an established vineyard on limestone, covered by the famous terra rossa soil of Coonawarra. Combined with cool, climatic conditions and an abundance of sunshine, this is the perfect location for vine growing.


In 1989, Penley Estate made its first vintage and after a decade, was able to invest in a state-of-the-art winery. Kym now uses a blend of modern and traditional winemaking techniques to produce Penley Estate’s full range of premium wines. In 2001, Penley Estate also opened its cellar door, allowing wine lovers to taste and visit the home of Penley Estate.

Since its establishment 25 years ago, Penley Estate has set a new standard in red wine production, not only in the Coonawarra region but also internationally. Winning a collection of reputable trophies and medals over the years, these accolades reflect Penley Estate’s dedication to producing the highest quality wines. When visiting the winery and exploring the beautiful grounds, you can also enjoy more of Coonawarra’s local produce, including honey, olive oil, vinegar and dukkah.



2010 Penley Estate Chertsey Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot

Deep crimson red in colour. Aroma of floral violets, plums and herb garden spices. Very complex with the subtle use of oak allowing the bouquet to radiate. The palate is medium-bodied and quite voluptuous in the mouth. Soft tannins linger on the finish. A very attractive wine, reflecting balance, elegance and power.

2009 Penley Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

This classic Australian red captures the distinctive characters of Coonawarra, highlighted by berry tones with great length and depth of flavour. The aroma is complex and fresh with blackcurrant leaf notes and hints of mulberry, blackberry fruits and licorice. Fragrant, sweet cedar notes linger on the nose. A very full-bodied and masculine wine.

2012 Penley Estate Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon

A medium-bodied wine with firm and fine tannins, creating a smooth and harmonious texture. Very linear with rustic flavours and great balance. The natural acidity adds delicate chalkiness and earthiness, with a firm, dry finish. The colour is vibrant with reddish hues. Strong aroma with berry notes and blackcurrant leafiness, and the subtle, balanced oak imparts spiciness.

2012 Penley Estate Hyland Shiraz

Medium depth with vibrant red hues. The aroma is of fresh red berries with a hint of spice. The subtle, smoky notes from the oak give this shiraz a fresh complexity. The palate is soft and round with a very smoky oak flavour to complete this fresh, medium-bodied Coonawarra shiraz. The flavours are a blend of oak, red current and a hint of spice.
