Hastwell & Lightfoot

Mclaren Vale is one of the most geographically diverse wine regions in the world with more than 40 unique geological units, ranging in age from less than 10,000 years to more than 650 million years. It was on one of the 10,000-year-old sand ridges that mark Hastwell and martin lightfoot and families planted their first vines in 1988.

Hastwell’s son James shared the passion and vision of these new beginnings and went on to study oenology, before stepping up as the company’s winemaker in 2003. The 62-acre property now features nearly 40 acres of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, shiraz, tempranillo, barbera, grenache, montepulciano, fiano and vermentino.

A three-acre olive grove of manzanillo, paragon and nevadillo blanco varieties are Contact Details    pressed locally, which ensures Hastwell & lightfoot has plenty of extra virgin olive oil available for sale.

With an ever-growing export market and distributors interstate, Hastwell & lightfoot recently opened a cellar door that is conveniently located between the vines and the winery.

With a focus on the winery’s catchcry, ‘wines made for eating’, the cellar door is a perfect location for visitors to be enlightened by food-pairing options. The wines hold brilliantly on their own, but pair them with food and they come alive. Think beachside fish and chips, smoked salmon or prosciutto with vermentino, slow cooked brisket or grilled lamb with shiraz, or maybe roasted capsicum, goats cheese or grilled eggplant with cabernet franc.

When the salivating over food and wine becomes too much, many visitors opt to stay a while and share a generous platter and a bottle of wine. Soaking up the sunshine on the deck that overlooks the vines is a popular spot to sip wine during spring through to autumn, but there’s something quite decadent about cosying up on a leather chesterfield in front of the fire in the Cellar Door’s Wine lounge and Gallery on a cold winter’s day.

The boutique family business has won a number of awards both nationally and internationally. Its 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon recently won a blue/gold award and was named one of the top 100 medium-bodied red wines at the Sydney International Wine Competition.

2017 Vermentino

Light citrus, peach and dried herb aromas precede the palate. With lovely stonefruit flavours throughout, as well as subtle hints of sea salt, this wine is vibrant, savoury and acidic, which leaves a lingering, more-ish finish.

2015 Cabernet Sauvignon

This wine is a signature, fragrant cabernet sauvignon lifted with notes of rose petal and firm, fine, mineral, confident tannins. It has impressive cassis persistence and is freshened by nicely balanced acidity.

2016 Tempranillo

Earthy and savoury flavours, which are balanced with dark fruits and black cherries, complement this tempranillo’s rustic tannins. Together, this gives the wine a clear varietal difference.

2016 Barbera

This barbera is the first-year release of this northern Italian variety. It has a gentle yet full mouthfeel, which carries flavours of prunes and spices. Plums and blackberries are present on the nose, which are supported by a dash of vanilla and nutmeg.
