Richard Hamilton Wines

Richard Hamilton Wines produces exceptional, fruit-driven wines that are reflective of the distinctive mclaren Vale region, and its mediterranean climate. The Hamilton family has been involved in winemaking and grape growing for six generations, since the first richard Hamilton established the vineyard in 1837. Dr richard Hamilton now continues his family’s long tradition of involvement in the wine industry.

The Mclaren Vale vineyards are some of the oldest vines in the region, and the vineyard that produces the Centurion Old Vines Shiraz was established in 1892. The grenache vines date back to 1947, and were planted by Hamilton’s father Burton Hamilton at Burton’s Vineyard. The shiraz vines were planted in 1963, and the cabernet sauvignon in 1968. The richard Hamilton range sources premium white wine varieties from South australia’s best regions – the cool-climate adelaide Hills, and Watervale in the Clare Valley.

All wines are produced from outstanding estate vineyards that consistently deliver wines of award-winning quality. richard Hamilton Wines specialises in red varieties such as shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and grenache, and the winery produces nine wines per year.

The winery’s red varieties include the Centurion Old Vine Shiraz, little road Shiraz, Hut Block Cabernet Sauvignon, lot 148 merlot, Burton’s Vineyard Old Bush Vine Grenache and Colton’s GSm, which is a blend of grenache, shiraz and mourvèdre.

Its white varieties include the Signature adelaide Hills Chardonnay, almond Grove Chardonnay, Watervale riesling, adelaide Hills Pinot Gris, and The Hills Sauvignon Blanc.

Richard Hamilton Wines also produces a rosè, which features merlot as its main variety. The wine is named after Dr Hamilton’s mother Gida. The winery also produces a Syn Chardonnay Pinot noir and Syn rouge Sparkling Shiraz, which are perfect for special occasions. The mclaren Vale cellar door, situated on large, open grounds, is surrounded by rose bushes and vineyards, and boasts sweeping views of the Willunga Hills.

Richard Hamilton Centurion Old Vine Shiraz

The essential element in producing this shiraz is the critical selection of the fruit from the 1892 plantings. The chosen grapes are left to mature for up to 24 months in high- quality oak, which adds further layers of complexity and character to the wine. This wine is designed to mature and develop to give many years of drinking pleasure.

Richard Hamilton Burton’s Vineyards Old Bush Vine Grenache

Fine, elegant, restrained and with a touch of cedar, the nose shows floral and cherry fragrances, with an underlying hint of pepper, which is typical of concentrated grenache. This wine is all about texture, length and balanced fruit. It has medium body in which the tannins are long and soft, while the bright fruit provides persistence of mouthfeel.

Richard Hamilton Hut Block Cabernet Sauvignon

The intensity of this wine can be attributed to the mild, maritime climate of mclaren Vale’s moderate day-time temperatures. rich, ripe cassis fruits show hints of mint with oak derived mocha and vanillin highlights. Full of vibrancy, this wine has round, succulent varietal fruits with long tannins that give persistence and length.

Richard Hamilton Lot 148 Merlot

This wine commemorates the first allotment of land that the Hamilton ancestors acquired in 1837. This merlot has attractive hints of savoury dark olive and cherry fruits, lifted with aromatic nuances of cloves and vanilla. This is an elegant, medium- bodied wine with a silky texture and soft acidity. The spectrum of fruit flavours also includes cherry and plum characters.
