Maxwell Wines

Since opening its doors in 1979 by Mark Maxwell, Maxwell Wines has built a reputation for producing high-quality, hand-made wines. Specialising in shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and grenache, Maxwell Wines is also Australia’s largest producer of mead.

Maxwell Wines’ flair for creating exceptional wines can be seen in its signature Lime Cave Cabernet Sauvignon and Ellen Street Shiraz, both of which are acclaimed for their cellaring potential and purity. The winery’s white wines also demonstrate a freshness and superb varietal character via slow, cool ferments.

The winery is renowned for its range of meads, as Maxwell Wines is the largest supplier in the southern hemisphere of this time-honoured, delicious, fermented honey wine. The Maxwell Meads purity of flavour is the result of more than 50 years of research and development, and is well worth the effort as the range has set the benchmark for mead around the world.

Spanning three levels, the winery is designed to take advantage of gravity flow throughout the winemaking process, contributing to the quality of the wines. Visitors are given the opportunity to view a ‘working winery’, surrounded by amazing views from the cellar door while sampling wines.

The vineyards themselves are some of the most favourably positioned in the McLaren Vale region, lying on south-facing slopes. Several other varieties of wines are grown, including merlot, malbec, montepulciano, tempranillo, and petit verdot, with the winery producing 15 different wines.

Owned and operated by Mark Maxwell, the winery employs a team of wine industry professionals who take a hands-on approach to ensure Maxwell Wines retains its reputation as a premier wine producer. Believing that “life’s too short to drink bad wine”, it’s no wonder Maxwell Wines produces world-acclaimed wines.

TASTING NOTES

2013 Maxwell Wines Minotaur Reserve Shiraz

Rich ruby-garnet in colour, this shiraz displays aromas of fresh nectarine and cherry, while deeper leather notes from the French oak barrels also linger. The palate is robust, showing gamey and complex forest- floor notes with elements of nutmeg, white pepper, and Satsuma plum.

2013 Maxwell Wines Ellen Street Shiraz

This cherry-red shiraz shows aromas of coffee and vanilla bean with violets, glacé fruits and cherries. Flavours of plum, chocolate, and blackberry are immediately detected in the first sip. This shiraz shows clean minerality and rich earthy characters through the middle palate, offering an intense concentration of fruit.

2013 Maxwell Wines Lime Cave Cabernet Sauvignon

Displaying aromas of blackcurrant and cherries, along with a posy of dried herbs and a splash of vanilla, this wine provides complex flavours of black cherries, cranberry and chocolate with an intense middle palate. Concentrated fine tannins provide an excellent balance.

2014 Maxwell Wines Four Roads Old Vine Grenache

This grenache displays a perfumed nose with maraschino cherry and raspberry fruits, coupled with savoury notes and subtle oak spice.
