Rusticana Wines

Owned and operated by the Meakins family, Rusticana Wines is located on the flood plains of Langhorne Creek. Stretching out across 25 acres on the alluvial flood plains of the Bremer River, the vineyard was first planted in the early 1990s.

Specialising in the production of red wine varieties, the winery produced its first wines under the label Rusticana Wines in 2003, and now produces varieties including shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, durif and zinfandel. The estate-grown wines are made under the guidance of consultant winemaker John Glaetzer, while the sparkling durif and the blanc dos blends are made by Simon Greenleaf. The semillon is also grown on-site, while the pinot grigio and savagnin are sourced from the neighbouring vineyards in Langhorne Creek.

With a two-storey cellar door overlooking the vineyard, Red Gum swamp and fields of horseradish, Rusticana Wines is a unique destination to enjoy with friends and family. The horseradish farm, which is situated on the same property as the cellar door, is the only one in Australia and produces up to 4000 jars of horseradish per week. Newman’s Horseradish was purchased by the Meakins family from Fred Newman in 1947, and has become an iconic food in South Australia.

Open seven days a week, Rusticana Wines’ cellar door is the perfect spot to relax with a picnic and a fantastic glass of wine out on the deck; or, simply pop in for a taste of the wines and other local produce on offer – you can even purchase your favourite local goods to take home and enjoy with friends and family.

TASTING NOTES

2014 Rusticana Cabernet Sauvignon

This cabernet sauvignon displays a great purple hue, with an aromatic bouquet, blackcurrant flavours and a hint of mint and eucalyptus. Aged for 22 months in American oak, it’s a full-bodied wine that will cellar for up to ten years.

NV Rusticana Sparkling Durif

This wine has been bottle-fermented after ageing in French and American oak for 12 months, resulting in a luscious sparkling red that is not too sweet, but is full of flavour.

2012 Rusticana Zinfandel

Matured for 20 months in a combination of French, American and Hungarian oak, this zinfandel has been hand-picked and bunch- thinned. An elegant savoury wine, it has a spicy flavour with a soft finish that lingers on the palate – ideal for Italian food.

2012 Rusticana Durif

This durif was matured for 22 months in a combination of French, American and Hungarian oak, allowing it to display a dense-purple colour. Saturated with blackberry, cherry and prunes, this wine also exhibits hints of chocolate. This full-bodied flavoursome wine has fine tannins and wonderful length on the palate.
