Brick Kiln

Brick Kiln was established in 2001 when three families – the Mackinnons, the Watsons and the Daveys – purchased the eight-hectare vineyard named Nine Gums Vineyard. The Watsons and the Daveys recently retired from the venture, leaving Malcolm and Alison Mackinnon to continue the production of the Brick Kiln wines.

Brick Kiln specialises in the production of shiraz wines, from grapes grown on a shiraz-only vineyard in Willunga. Brick Kiln concentrates on making the very best McLaren Vale shiraz possible by using non-interventionist winemaking techniques.

Four hectares of the vineyard were planted with shiraz vines in 1996 and 1998, with the remaining four hectares planted in 2001. The marvellous microclimate of the Willunga Hills results in great-quality wines with excellent fruit depth.

In summer, the sea breeze from the Gulf cools the ripening grapes in the afternoon, while the gully breeze from the Willunga Hills cools the vines by night. This microclimate, together with the rich Urrbrae loam soil, allows the team to consistently harvest rich, ripe fruit to achieve the characteristic flavour and depth of its Brick Kiln Shiraz.

Harvesting – always overnight by a mechanical harvester to ensure fruit is as cool as possible when delivered to the winery – is initiated on berry taste and structure. Winemaker Phil Christiansen ferments the grapes in two-tonne open fermenters for ten days, before basket pressing and maturing them in oak hogsheads for 18 months.

For each vintage, 30 per cent of the hogsheads are made from new oak. French oak hogsheads are used exclusively for the maturation of its The Grove Reserve Shiraz, and usually 50 per cent of these are new. The Brick Kiln Single Vineyard Shiraz is matured predominantly in American oak hogsheads.

From this eight-hectare shiraz vineyard, Brick Kiln produces three single-vineyard shiraz wines – a Brick Kiln Shiraz, The Grove Reserve Shiraz, and, rarely, The Ingot Super Reserve Shiraz. Brick Kiln also produces a vintage sparkling shiraz with a minimum 12 months on lees, and a crisp, dry Brick Kiln Shiraz Rosé.

2014 Single Vineyard Shiraz

A voluptuous shiraz with dense berry fruit, hints of chocolate and caramel with a long finish from balanced tannins.

2015 The Grove Single Vineyard Reserve Shiraz

Matured for 18 months in 100 per cent French oak hogsheads, this wine has opulent berry and plum flavours and a rich, full finish.

2016 Single Vineyard Vintage Sparkling Shiraz

With more than 12 months on lees, this bottle-fermented wine has wonderful underlying rich shiraz fruit flavours with brilliance added by a fine bread.

2017 Single Vineyard Shiraz Rosé

With no sugar added after fermentation, this rosé is crisp and dry with subtle fruit flavours, which makes it a wonderful summer wine.
