Dennis Wines

Specialising in red wine varieties including shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, merlot and grenache, Dennis Wines produces premium red wines harvested on the family vineyard, Nindethana, situated at McLaren Flat. These grapes were planted by Egerton Dennis when the winery was established in 1968. Egerton – known to friends and family as Ege – was a well-known figure in McLaren Vale, starting the winery after serving in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) during the Second World War.

In 1975, when Egerton retired, his son Peter Dennis took over the winemaking and management of Dennis Wines and has since continued this role. Like his father, Peter is dedicated to producing quality wines, rather than large quantities.

The winery is inherently part of the history of South Australia, as it sits on an Aboriginal spring, which was the first water source for the McLaren Vale township. It was also the site of the first land holding in McLaren Vale. There is a National Trust monument on the land to commemorate early settlers, as well as the first church in the region and picnic facilities to enjoy in warmer weather.

While Dennis Wines is most recognised for its award winning reds and premium sauvignon blanc, it has also been producing mead that is fermented from honey and spices. In addition, Dennis Wines’ Egerton Vintage Port honours the winery’s founder. Rich in fruit and licorice flavours, the port is old and well developed in style.

Since it was first established, Dennis Wines has received a multitude of accolades, including more than 200 medals at capital city and international wine shows.

Situated only one kilometre from the main street of McLaren Vale, the cellar door is open daily so visitors can enjoy the range of traditional and affordable reds, whites and ports.

2013 Peter Dennis Shiraz

This wine was fermented on skins in open fermenters until run off and pressing. It was aged in French and American oak hogsheads for 12 months. Rich, flavoursome and soft, it will be enhanced with two to three years of maturation. It will go very well with roast beef or steak, and is especially good with full-flavoured Australian cheeses.

2009 Peter Dennis Cabernet Sauvignon

This wine exhibits intense, lifted cabernet sauvignon berry fruit character on the nose, with spicy, sweet yet soft undertones of oak. The palate is long, complex, mouth- filling and supple with a cleansing, crisp acid, which holds onto the finish. Cellaring for two to five years will enable this wine to realise its full potential.

2010 Dennis Grenache

This wine was aged in French and American oak hogsheads for 12 months prior to bottling. It shows lifted aromatic grenache fruit on the nose and palate, with subtle non-dominant integrated oak, which leads to a long fruit- driven, crisp finish. This wine can be enjoyed now, but will be greatly enhanced with two to three years of ageing.

2011 Peter Dennis Matilda Cabernet Shiraz Merlot

This wine was aged in American oak hogsheads for 12 months prior to bottling. The wine is full-bodied and soft, with tonnes of rich berry fruit characteristics from these renowned varieties. Designed for modern living, this wine will accompany a wide variety of foods and cooking styles. Drink when thirsty; it will improve for five or so years.
