Geoff Merrill Wines

Geoff Merrill Wines is situated at the historic Mount Hurtle Winery, which was established in 1897. The winery’s nestled among three acres of vineyards and gardens, and is home to a large family of geese and ducks.

Geoff purchased Mount Hurtle Winery in 1985, and after two years of love and hard work, he restored the winery and vineyard to its former glory, with the help of his supporters. By 1988, Geoff was producing wines under his own label, where he continued to gain national and international recognition for his distinctive style of Geoff’s winemaking philosophy is to produce wine that allows regional, varietal and vintage expression, without excessive winemaker intervention. Producing great wine is a matter of balance, and his passion for subtle, elegant and harmonious flavours in wine is well documented. He believes that maturation, both in the cask and bottle prior to release, plays an important role in achieving this.

The winery’s product range consists of three tiers; the premium regional selection, the reserve selection, which is a collection of exceptional barrels that are held for extended maturation in its cellars, and the pinnacle Henley shiraz.

Named in honour of Geoff’s grandfather, the Henley shiraz is one of Australia’s distinguished, elite red wines, and is popular among high-end wine connoisseurs and investors. Only a strict barrel selection of the best vintage McLaren Vale shiraz is used for this exclusive and limited-edition wine.

Geoff Merrill Wines has vineyards in a number of Australia’s classic viticultural regions, including Pimpala Vineyard and Wickham Vineyard in McLaren Vale and Graymoor Vineyard in Coonawarra. These sites showcase the quality that Geoff Merrill Wines is known for.

While retaining a Tuscan charm, the original winery and barrel maturation cellar now copes with the rigors of modern-day winemaking, and produces of 50,000 cases of wine each year.

Geoff Merrill Henley

Geoff Merrill’s icon wine, Henley, is a unique selection of barrels showcasing the strengths of the vintage. The aroma is generous, inviting    and    characteristically McLaren Vale. The palate is full- flavoured, yet shows restraint. Fine, powerful tannins come forward as the ripe fruit flavours subside, revealing the elegant structure beneath.

Geoff Merrill Reserve Shiraz

This stylish shiraz is warm and enticing. The palate is voluptuous and seductive – initially appearing generous and inviting before revealing the serious structure beneath. Extended maturation, both in the barrel and the bottle, before release has allowed the wine to gain sophistication and grace.

Geoff Merrill Jackos Shiraz

Michael ‘Jacko’ James worked at Geoff Merrill Wines’ cellars until he succumbed to a long battle with leukaemia at the age of 26. Geoff Merrill Wines’ tribute to him is this smooth, rich shiraz. This wine has firm tannins and acid structure, with dark fruits of blackcurrant and mulberry, white pepper and anise, and shows the complex, well-integrated subtle oak.

Geoff Merrill Reserve Chardonnay

This beautifully structured, elegant wine is well sought after. The aroma is an inviting blend of citrus fruits, nectarine and rockmelon, and shows warm, toasted cashew oak characters. The palate has a delightfully fine, yet flavourful, mouthfeel. The zesty fruit immediately hits the palate and moves seamlessly through to the silky, balanced finish.
