Scarpantoni Estate Wines

Originally from the Abruzzi region of central Italy, Domenico Scarpantoni immigrated to Australia in 1952 and, after a couple of years travelling and working, settled in the McLaren Vale region. After he and his wife, Paola, purchased several hectares of land throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the couple became one of the largest private growers in the region at that time.

In 1979, Domenico established Scarpantoni Estate Wines with the aid of his two sons, Michael and Filippo. In the years that followed, Scarpantoni Estate Wines has continued to expand, including the purchase of more vineyards and land around the region.

Sourcing fruit from multiple sites that are scattered around McLaren Vale, Scarpantoni Estate Wines produces a wide variety of wines that showcase the differences in soils, weather conditions and other factors. These differing elements are manipulated in order to make great wines including a noteworthy shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, sauvignon blanc, gamay and chardonnay.

The sites Scarpantoni Estate Wines sources from include Maslin Beach, where vines grown on hard limestone rock soil produce intense spicy fruit, as well as California Road’s terra rossa on limestone, which is close to the centre of the McLaren Vale region. Pedler Creek features three different clones of shiraz, grown mostly on grey soil.

Block 3 has become somewhat of a benchmark-style for shiraz in the region, winning both the Great Australian Shiraz Challenge and Winestate magazine’s Shiraz of the Year in 2008. The Brothers’ Block – located directly behind the winery on ironstone soil – has been hand-planted and maintained by Michael and Filippo Scarpantoni since the 1970s and produces the winery’s award winning cabernet sauvignon variety, which won The Jimmy Watson Trophy in 2007.

Scarpantoni Estate Wines remains a family business throughout every step of production, from viticulture to the final packaged product. All production is entirely on the premises, which gives the Scarpantoni family total control over every stage of the winemaking process so the highest standards are maintained.

TASTING NOTES

2014 Scarpantoni School Block White

School Block White is a blend of 70 per cent sauvignon blanc, 20 per cent semillon and ten per cent chenin blanc. This wine shows plenty of citrus, passionfruit, lime, green apples and lemongrass flavours. The palate is full, soft and balanced, with a crisp acid finish.

2010 Scarpantoni School Block Red

This wine is a blend of 60 per cent shiraz, 30 per cent cabernet sauvignon and ten per cent merlot. The shiraz and cabernet sauvignon contribute towards the ripe black fruits, plums and chocolate that dominate the nose and palate. The wine is quite full in body from the shiraz, but soft from the merlot component, which really comes out on its own.

2012 Scarpantoni Block 3 Shiraz

Block 3 Shiraz is very much a reflection of where it comes from in McLaren Vale. Ripe blackberries, licorice, cinnamon and mocha are the hallmark Block 3 Shiraz characters seen in each release. Always full in body with a fine-grained tannin structure, it glides seamlessly across the palate, allowing the Block 3 Shiraz to be easily enjoyed in its youth.

2010 Scarpantoni Brothers’ Block Cabernet Sauvignon

Brothers’ Block Cabernet Sauvignon is full in body with plenty of blackcurrants, blackberries and mint, along with cedary, spicy French oak notes complementing the fruit. The palate is generous and the tannins are ripe, providing structure and grip to the palate.
