Fox Creek Wines

Fox Creek Wines was first established in 1984, when Jim and Helen Watts bought the property and went about planting vines on the black clay that had previously been used for grazing sheep and growing barley. Stretching across 32 hectares of land, the vines thrived and bore exceptionally high-quality and sought-after fruit.

In 1994, the fruit that was previously sold to other wineries was instead retained by the family and lovingly crafted into supreme quality wine, including the award winning Fox Creek Reserve Shiraz.

The cellar door is a 19th-century stone cottage, built by the Malpas family in the 1880s.

Located only 45 kilometres south of Adelaide, the cellar door is surrounded by picturesque grounds with a lake and impressive, ancient olive and eucalypt trees.

In an Australian first, Fox Creek Wines altered its back labels to feature large-print text and braille in 2009. The winery works closely with The Royal Society for the Blind (RSB) to design and produce labels and the initiative has been well-received on local and national levels.

The on-site, state-of-the-art winery with modern equipment allows every winemaking operation to be performed to the highest standard. An array of stainless steel open fermenters support high quality, small batch-orientated production, in line with the company’s boutique winemaking approach.

Two of the company’s wines, JSM Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc and Postmaster Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre, are named after James Stanley Malpas and his father, Henry Malpas, respectively. James was a decorated war hero whose family lived in what is now the cellar door cottage. Henry was the first owner of the plot of land that is now the home of Fox Creek Wines. As well as building the beautiful Willunga House in 1849, he opened a general store and took over the mail duties from the local police in 1852 for 21 years.

2012 Fox Creek Reserve Shiraz

This wine has great depth of colour, aroma and flavour, typical of the best wines of the McLaren Vale region. It has an extraordinary range of flavours with blackberry, blackcurrant, licorice and dark chocolate. The wine has a rich, sweet-fruit mid-palate and the finish is long. While approachable when young, it will improve with careful cellaring.

NV Vixen Sparkling Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc

A sparkling red of great intensity, depth of flavour and persistence on the palate, this wine’s dark crimson colour is matched by an intensity of flavour, which has been described as liquid black-forest cake. It oozes opulent blackberry, licorice and chocolate flavours and has a lingering semi-dry finish.

2012 Fox Creek Short Row Shiraz

A very popular wine first produced in 1999. It has a rich and powerful aroma with a palate of blackberries, toast and sweet fruit. The wine is well-balanced with fresh rich fruit and soft tannins with a long, dry finish. A classic McLaren Vale shiraz, which benefits from a period of decanting and is suitable for mid-term cellaring.

2012 JSM Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc

This wine was named after the decorated army Captain James Stanley Malpas. Its colour is deep, vibrant and garnet-red, with an aroma of dark cherry, raspberry and savoury deli meats. The palate is fresh with flavours of cherry and dark berries and spice from cabernet franc. The mid-palate offers rich fruit and the wine finishes dry.
