S.C. Pannell

Stephen Pannell started S.C. Pannell in 2004, as a reflection of the styles and varieties of wines he likes to drink. The wines are forward-thinking, made from varieties that are best suited to his beloved McLaren Vale vineyards, in styles that show a synergy with the winemaker’s way of life and food he eats.

Importantly, these wines have a sense of place, echoing the vineyards in which they are grown with minimal intervention in the winery. These wines are grown, not made.

Pannell’s knowledge and experience have been harvested over many years working with some of Australia’s most iconic wineries, including Wirra Wirra and Hardys Tintara. Some highlights of Stephen’s career include winning the title of International Red Winemaker of the Year at the 2014 International Wine Challenge in London, as well as the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show in 2014.

To ensure the natural wine profile is retained, Stephen uses open fermentation, natural yeast and maturation in large-format oak. The winemaking strategy emphasises Stephen’s passion for the McLaren Vale region. Since the small, family-owned winery was founded in 2004, S.C. Pannell continues to produce wines that express a sense of place, defining the character and expression of McLaren Vale.

Specialising in exceptional Adelaide Hills whites and McLaren Vale reds, S.C. Pannell produces 13 wines per year across 23 hectares of vines. The winery’s recently renovated cellar door is located on Olivers Road, alongside some of the most iconic wineries in McLaren Vale, and is an extension of Stephen’s winemaking ethos.

At the cellar door, you can taste your way through the portfolio, completing the experience with a seasonal tapas menu, while looking out over one of the best views in the region.

2012 S.C. Pannell Grenache

This grenache is sourced from a single vineyard of more than 70-year- old vines, which are simply managed without pesticides, ensuring optimal expression of the fruit. It was an exceptional year in McLaren Vale in 2012, resulting in a wine showing great depth of colour, alongside great flavour intensity and complexity. The highlight of the vintage is the quality and strength of the tannins.

2012 S.C. Pannell The Vale

The rich black fruits and spice of the shiraz are lifted by, and marry with, the perfumed musk and red fruits of the grenache. These two varieties unite to achieve a seamless medium-bodied wine with a silky texture. The grenache softens the mid-palate exuberance of the shiraz as well as providing great length. The finish is well structured with savoury gritty tannins.

2013 S.C. Pannell Syrah

This cool-climate syrah was sourced from Echunga, with fruit grown on well-drained, granitic soil. This wine pays homage to the style of wine that originated from the Northern Rhône Valley of France. This syrah is juicy, elegant and refined, but importantly, still has an underlying sense of power and depth of flavour with beautiful tannins.

2013 S.C. Pannell Grenache Shiraz Touriga

This blend represents McLaren Vale’s shift from traditional single varietals to wines that reflect the diversity of the region. The grenache brings lifted aromatics and its trademark sandy tannins, shiraz chimes in with red fruits, spice and weight, while the touriga wine adds pungent fruit characteristics of plum pudding, dried spices and floral notes.
