Kalleske Wines

The oldest certified-organic and biodynamic vineyard and winery in the Barossa Valley region is Kalleske Wines. With a long heritage of farming and grape growing, the Kalleske family’s 50 hectares of vineyard produces its wine just the way nature intended.

The Kalleske family has enjoyed a long and fruitful history in Greenock and has consistently grown some of Barossa Valley’s best quality grapes. When Troy and Tony Kalleske established the winery in 2002, they knew they would be taking advantage of the property’s century-old vines in order to produce delicious wines full of complexity.

Kalleske Wines produces varieties that are estate-grown and vinified with minimalist winemaking techniques, in order to fully capture the essence of the vineyard itself. The vineyard is grown on healthy soil, attained by organic and biodynamic methods, which the company believes is the prime basis for healthy vines, expressive grapes and quality wines. With a firm belief in the merits of organic farming, Kalleske Wines cultivates unique drops that are genuine, honest and true to its site.

In 2014 alone, Kalleske Wines won Best Small Cellar Door in the Barossa Valley by Gourmet Traveller Wine, as well as being rated five red stars in James Halliday’s 2014 Australian Wine Companion. In addition, the winery was awarded Best Organic Wine Producer of the Year at the AWC Vienna International Wine Challenge, the largest officially-recognised wine competition in the world.

While Kalleske Wines states that its biodynamic method of production relies on the simplicity of nature, its success is nothing short of extraordinary.

2012 Kalleske Johann Georg Shiraz

Intense dark berry fruits with blueberry, nutmeg spice, cedar, roast meats, coffee and herbs on the nose. The rich palate is full-bodied and superbly balanced. Pristine dark fruit is complemented with subtle barrel ferment characters adding complexity. Fine natural tannins add structure and definition. Will benefit from a decade or more in the cellar.

2013 Kalleske Old Vine Grenache

The nose is lifted with aromatics of rose petals, musk, raspberries, malt and sweet spice. The rich palate is mouthfilling with bright varietal grenache fruit flavours of cherry, licorice and a touch of herbs and earthiness. Natural grainy tannins add solid structure and longevity. A lengthy finish completes this complex wine. Drinks well now but is ideally suited for serious cellaring.

2014 Kalleske Clarry’s GSM

Inviting and lifted aromatics of wild berries, rose perfume, marzipan, all-spice, raspberry, musk, licorice and a touch of forest earth. Fresh and bright slatey tannins add backbone and structure. The hallmark of this well-balanced wine is fruit purity, respected by limited maturation in seasoned barrels. Best enjoyed now or over the next five years.

2014 Kalleske Rosina Rosé

Bright rose-petal pink in colour with lifted aromatics of floral perfume, musk, strawberries and cream, raspberry, jasmine and potpourri emanating from the glass. The palate is alive with intense bright berry fruits, toffee apple and delicious juiciness. Natural grape sweetness adds mouthfeel and generosity, framed by subtle acidity. Enjoy now.
