Penfolds Barossa Valley

The Penfolds empire was established in 1844 by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife, Mary Penfold. An iconic brand with a penchant for producing outstanding wines, Penfolds Barossa Valley enjoys a large portfolio, and in 2014 celebrates 170 years of producing outstanding varieties.

Located in the heart of the Barossa Valley, Penfolds Barossa Valley was built in the early 20th century in order to expand the business beyond its Magill site. With access to more than 500 hectares of fruit in Barossa Valley, the winery specialises in shiraz, cabernet and chardonnay, but also enjoys experimenting with other varieties.

A visit to Penfolds Barossa Valley allows enthusiasts to discover the unique world of winemaking through two unmissable tours. The Make Your Own Blend tour invites visitors to make their own wine from grenache, shiraz and mourvèdre. Alternatively, the Taste of Grange tour provides an insight into the philosophy of Penfolds and includes the ultimate winetasting experience – a must for those who appreciate premium wine.

It is no surprise that Penfolds Barossa Valley is actively involved, and has achieved, many awards for its wines. Most recently, the winery received 100 points from Robert Parker for its 2008 Penfolds Grange, as well as 99 points from Tony Love for its 2010 Penfolds St Henri Shiraz.

Awarded by James Halliday as Winery of the Year in the 2013 Australian Wine Companion, a tour of Penfolds Barossa Valley is imperative for those who visit the iconic wine region.

2012 Penfolds Magill Estate Shiraz
This single-vineyard shiraz is sourced from the original plantings at Magill Estate, just 8kms from Adelaide’s CBD. First produced in 1983, this elegant, medium-weight style shiraz has a velvety texture and fine tannins.

2010 Penfolds Cellar Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon
The tradition of innovation and experimentation is central to the Penfolds winemaking philosophy and is perpetuated in the form of Penfolds Cellar Reserve wines. These sometimes one-off releases emerge periodically after being nurtured carefully in the cellar.

2012 Penfolds RWT Shiraz
This single-region shiraz is sourced from the Barossa Valley vineyards. RWT stands for Red Winemaking Trial. The first vintage of RWT was in 1997 and its style is opulent and fleshy.

2013 Penfolds Reserve Bin Chardonnay
This is a single-region chardonnay from Adelaide Hills. The fruit is handpicked, whole-bunch pressed and then placed directly into French oak barrels where it undergoes natural fermentation.
